Consciousness and Memory

Consciousness, or our awareness of ourselves and our surroundings, encompasses everything from basic awareness to thinking, decision-making, and a sense of self. It is deeply intertwined with memory, which allows us to learn and recognize patterns, and provides context for our thinking.

Researchers are working to understand neural activity patterns that define consciousness in different contexts — like alertness, focus, or dreaming, and understanding how experiences are encoded, stored, and retrieved both in the short- and long-term.

Advances in neuroimaging and computational neuroscience are helping to advance this work, especially in the areas of development, neurodivergence, and aging.

One recent study looked at how the brain distinguishes between similar experiences through pattern separation, by developing a new task called spontaneous location recognition. It was the first to test pattern separation during the phase where information is being processed by observing the reaction of rodents to the movement of an object to a new location. This helps advance understanding of memory impairments like those seen in Alzheimer's disease.

A new mathematical method to analyze neuronal spikes that occur as experiences are encoded in the brain has found that the timing may be as crucial as the rate for understanding behaviour and memory. The work offers the first mathematical framework for interpreting spike patterns, which could be important for behaviour and memory.

Ongoing research is looking at how consciousness can persist even in patients who appear entirely unresponsive, such as those with severe brain injuries. Traditional bedside tests can fail to detect this covert awareness, but new neuroimaging techniques are being used to reveal consciousness.
