Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's is a complicated brain condition that can result in a variety of symptoms that are different from person to person. They range from the more well-known tremors and loss of balance, to lesser-known emotional, cognitive, and autonomic symptoms. The progression of the disease, caused by deterioration in a specific part of the brain that affects the production of an important neurotransmitter called dopamine, also varies.
One of BrainsCAN's major initiatives has been the McGill-Western Initiative for Translational Neuroscience (ITN), a collaborative effort between the two universities to focus research on biotherapeutics and Parkinson's disease, which has enabled open data sharing across the research and wider community.
Additional research has focused more closely on dopamine and other neurotransmitters to better understand the brain's reward network, which could point to new treatments for Parkinson's and other diseases.
