Cervical myelopathy - this is a compression of the cervical spinal cord, the part of the spine commonly known as the neck, which could result from an injury, disease or congenital condition. It is a vital part of the central nervous system and even a small injury can lead to severe disability. The cervical spine is also susceptible to age-related degeneration, the most common disorder of the spinal cord in people over 55. By age 70, 90% of people have some form of degenerative change detectible in the cervical spine even when they are symptom free. A common symptom is tingling, weakness or numbness in the arms, hands or fingers and disturbed fine motor skills.
