Keyword: biomarkers

Biomarkers - a biomarker is a measurable indicator of a disease or other condition within an organism, such as detection or increase of an antibody that indicates an infection. It can also indicate the risk or progression of a disease or to help evaluate a treatment – cholesterol values are a biomarker for the risk of coronary and vascular disease, blood pressure is used to determine the risk of stroke. They help in early diagnosis, disease prevention, drug target identification, drug response and other applications. There is much ongoing research in identifying new biomarkers for conditions such as concussion that would allow earlier diagnosis and could form the basis of preventive and personalised medicines.
