Keyword: Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease - This is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that is the cause of 60-70% of all cases of dementia. The symptoms are wide-ranging, usually starting with short-term memory problems. As the disease progresses it can encompass language issues, disorientation, mood swings, loss of motivation, behavioural issues and eventually, the loss of bodily functions. The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is poorly understood, although there is support for a genetic component as well as head injuries, depression, hypertension, obesity and type 2 diabetes as contributing risk factors. Currently it is untreatable.
